Barcelona concentrates Spain's most diverse HealthTech ecosystem: telemedicine, patient management, wearables, AI-powered diagnostics, clinical trial platforms and digital mental health. Hospital Clínic, Vall d'Hebron and the 22@ Tech District form the context where the country's most relevant health applications are built. The ecosystem attracts investment from specialised health digital funds.

Dribba has built apps for clinics, insurers and digital health startups in Barcelona. We understand GDPR applied to medical data, integration with HIS/EHR systems via HL7/FHIR, the MDR CE marking for medical software, and the UX specific to clinical environments — where usability is a clinical requirement, not just a preference. If your health startup is in Barcelona, work with the team that already knows the sector.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions.

The most relevant are: GDPR applied to health data (special category under Article 9), which imposes stricter legal basis requirements and technical measures; the MDR Regulation for software classified as a medical device (SaMD); Spain's Law 41/2002 on patient autonomy; and the HL7/FHIR standard for interoperability with hospital HIS/EHR systems. The regulatory classification of the product must be resolved in Product Discovery.

Integration with HIS (Hospital Information Systems) or EHR (Electronic Health Records) is done via HL7 FHIR — the medical data interoperability standard — or through proprietary APIs of the specific system (Epic, Cerner, SAP IS-H, etc.). Complexity varies enormously: from relatively standard FHIR integrations to adapting legacy systems with decades of history.

Barcelona provides access to a European-reference hospital cluster (Hospital Clínic, Vall d'Hebron, Sant Pau) for clinical validation and pilot studies, bioengineering and health sciences talent from UB and UPF, specialised digital health investors, and the Barcelona Health Hub as an ecosystem connecting startups with the public health system.

A basic HealthTech app — telemedicine or patient management — starts at €60,000–100,000 for an MVP. Apps with HIS/EHR integration, clinical AI features or medical device classification (MDR) can exceed €200,000. The cost of regulatory compliance is real but not optional — it's what separates a serious health app from one that cannot operate in clinical environments.
