The problem

The ANERIS project, funded at the European level and led by CSIC, needed a mobile app that allowed citizens without scientific training to actively contribute to the identification and cataloguing of marine species. The app had to be simple enough for non-technical users while robust enough to generate data valid for scientific research.

Our approach

Dribba developed the Minka app for iOS and Android with Flutter, incorporating precise geolocation to record the location of each observation and image processing to assist with species identification. The interface was designed with a very simple guided flow, so that anyone — from an amateur diver to a beach tourist — can contribute valid observations to the project.

The ANERIS Project is a European consortium of more than 20 organisations dedicated to marine ecosystem conservation, led by CSIC. Within this framework, Dribba developed Minka: a citizen science app that allows anyone to contribute to the identification and cataloguing of marine species.

The app was developed in Flutter for iOS and Android, with two key features: geolocation to record the exact point of each observation, and image processing to guide the user in species identification. The UX design prioritises simplicity: anyone can complete a valid observation in under a minute. As Flutter official Google Partner in Spain, Dribba ensured the highest quality standards throughout development.

Dribba's participation in ANERIS as a technology partner is an example of how well-designed mobile tools can scale scientific data collection capacity. Citizen observations recorded in the app feed directly into the consortium researchers' databases.
