The problem

Barcelona City Council wanted to offer residents and visitors a simple way to locate the city's public fountains: where they are, what type of water they provide and whether they are accessible. The information existed scattered across internal municipal systems and needed to be made easily and usefully accessible on mobile.

Our approach

Dribba developed FontsBCN with Flutter: an app that shows all of Barcelona's public fountains on an interactive map with their associated information, geolocates the user to find the nearest ones and integrates with the municipal CMS to keep data up to date. The interface was designed to be accessible to both residents and tourists.

Barcelona has hundreds of public fountains spread across its streets, squares and parks. Barcelona City Council commissioned Dribba to build FontsBCN: an app that catalogues all the city's fountains and makes them easily accessible to residents and visitors via their phones.

The app was developed natively with an interactive map as the central feature: the user sees nearby fountains in real time thanks to geolocation, can filter by fountain type and accesses each one's information — water type, accessibility, status — with a single tap. Integration with the municipal CMS allows the City Council team to update fountain information without technical intervention. This type of digital product for public administrations requires particular attention to accessibility and usability for very broad user profiles.

FontsBCN is an example of an everyday urban utility app: simple, fast and purposeful. The map with geolocation responds in real time, the information for each fountain is clear, and the app functions correctly even with limited coverage — an important consideration for use in tourist areas with heavy network traffic.
